What are Topical Lightening Agents
AKA Skin Whitening Creams. They are creams and gels applied to the skin to cause skin lightening. They can be used to treat melasma, and Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH), and to even out the colour of a patient’s skin
They are also used as a preventative to decrease the incidence of PIH after laser procedures
What are some examples of Topical Lightening agents?
Kojic acid and hydroquinone
What are the risks of topical Lightening Agents?
* Skin irritation
* hydroquinone may cause Ochronosis, where the skin changes to a blue-grey colour.
